Home to some of the most important buildings in London, as well as some of the finest cultural attractions of the city, Westminster is a district of the capital outstanding. Located on the north bank of the Thames, the district of Westminster in London has developed around the Abbey of Westminster. Home to Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament (or House of Parliament) and Big Ben, Westminster is rich in history and culture. In addition, Westminster has some of the best shopping opportunities in London and some of the best entertainment. We spoke with Joe Chalmers local expert to learn more about this fascinating part of London.
What event do you expect with the greatest eagerness to Westminster this summer?
I'm really passionate about the West End Live. This is a great event, in which all West End shows out in the open air on Leicester Square. All your favorite shows make an appearance. There is much talk in Chicago this year as Jerry Springer will occupy the center stage to give us a taste of his performance in the role of Billy Flynn.
Do you have any recommendations for entertainment in the evening?
For a romantic evening in the West End, there is no better spectacle than the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Phantom of the Opera. I love this love story between an opera singer and an attractive young composer, a perfect exit after a dinner for two in the heart of London.
I heard that the West End is the best area for shopping in London, but where to start?
For me, the best place is the fabulous Grand Selfridges, with its trendy showcases his exceptional choice of how innovative and inimitable style and glamor. This year, Selfridges celebrates its centenary in May and throughout the summer. I heard that there will be a captivating blend of visual delights and engaging events for all clients.
I want to see the sights of Westminster, what can you recommend?
I never get tired of visiting Buckingham Palace. The State Rooms are open to the public in August and September. Their magnificence is impressive even if I see them almost every day! The ceremony of the Changing of the Guard takes place at 11am at Horse Guards. The mounted sentries (who are identified every hour) are on call every day from 10h to 16h. [Check beforehand because the ceremony will take place on certain days. Visit the Royal Website for a full schedule.] From Buckingham Palace, you can easily walk to other outstanding sites in London including the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, St James' Palace and 10 Downing Street.
The district of Westminster he has a unique place where you like to relax after work?
I recommend a visit to the National Gallery on a Friday night. Few people know that the museum is open until 21h and that we can take advantage of the quieter areas without the crowds on weekends. I am always delighted to enjoy all the free art of such quality here in Westminster, and make sure not to miss the famous Van Gogh Sunflowers!
